Yisrael Avraham, affectionately called “Izzy” by his friends, is the congregational leader of Crown of Messiah.
As a Messianic Jew, Yisrael firmly believes in Yeshua of Nazareth as the Messiah of Israel, and practices his faith within the framework of Biblical Judaism, the religion that Messiah himself practiced. Yisrael is an ethnic Jew who grew up in an Evangelical Christian home, and cherishes both his heritage of faith in the Messiah Yeshua, and his connection to the historical covenant people of God. Yisrael’s background enables him to move freely and converse fluently in both the Jewish and Christian worlds, and has resulted in his deep desire to see all of God’s people come into their inheritance: for the Jewish people, experiencing the transforming power of the Messiah Yeshua, and for Yisrael’s Christian friends: discovering their heritage in the Torah, and recovering the original connection to the Jewish expression of faith in Messiah that the early Christians cherished.
Yisrael is married to Genevieve, originally from California. Yisrael and Genevieve met in Israel on the Mount of Blessing in historical Samaria, where they were both doing volunteer vineyard work in an Orthodox Jewish settlement. As Crown of Messiah’s congregational leader, Yisrael’s job description is to provide servant-leadership by identifying the needs of Messiah’s people in his own congregation and in the greater body of Messiah in his area, and facilitating the meeting of those needs through the exercise of his own giftings and those of others in the body.
As Crown of Messiah’s teacher, Yisrael’s job description is to regularly bring teaching that will make authentic, quality disciples of Messiah who will then go on to make more disciples of the same caliber.
As a Biblical Hebrew teacher with a rich connection to the soul of the Bible’s original language, Yisrael delights in plumbing the depths of the Holy Scriptures, and enjoys bringing forth many sparkling Hebrew treasures in his teachings. Yisrael’s teachings range from intensely practical to emotionally moving to historically informative to inspiringly visionary, and his style is personal, humorous, eclectic, and fast-paced. Because he gets bored more quickly than most people and therefore feels compassion for people with short attention spans, Yisrael tries to regularly incorporate visual elements, skits, video clips, and anything else that could add meaningful variety into his messages.
Yisrael has been actively involved in the leadership of two Messianic congregations before founding congregation Crown of Messiah, and he takes his responsibilities as a teacher and congregational leader seriously. Yisrael places a high value on accountability, and is engaged in intentional relationships with several seasoned mentors. Yisrael also firmly believes that he can only take his congregation as far as he goes, so he places a high priority on excelling in his own personal development and discipleship to the Master, and is careful to maintain a high level of passionate devotion in his own pursuit of the lover of his soul, his King Yeshua.
Yisrael’s favourite activities include spending time with his little family, developing friendships in the body of Messiah in person and over the internet, poring over the Scriptures for hours, studying church history and early Jewish literature, and any activity that will put him in the wilderness, including hiking, camping, long-distance running, and canoing.
